Lacprodan® BLG-100 from Ala Foods Denmark supports dietary management of chronic kidney disease

Danish Ara Food Ingredients is demonstrating how its new protein ingredient Lacprodan ® BLG-100 (pure beta-lactoglobulin) can provide benefits for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.

Chronic kidney disease is the progressive loss of kidney function that can eventually lead to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It affects more than 850 million adults worldwide and causes 1 million deaths each year 1 , and these numbers are expected to increase. When kidney function deteriorates, it becomes increasingly difficult for patients with chronic kidney disease to maintain adequate dietary protein intake while avoiding excessive intake of minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and calcium.

To show manufacturers how to make products that can help people with chronic kidney disease, Ala Foods Denmark has launched two solutions using Lacprodan® BLG-100: a ready-to-drink (RTD) drink with 7% protein, and a One is an injection containing 21% protein.

The ready-to-drink beverage is designed to be 7% protein, 10% fat and 20% carbohydrate and is provided to patients with chronic kidney disease stages 1 to 5 who are not on dialysis. Lacprodan® BLG-100 is a low-viscosity beverage that is very low in phosphorus compared to most other commercially available alternatives.

The second option is high-protein injections, a dietary management regimen designed specifically for chronic kidney disease patients undergoing dialysis and those with fluid intake restrictions or high protein needs. This application is ideal for controlling phosphorus levels in the body while adding high-quality protein to the diet.

Mads Dyrvig, Head of Sales, Health and Sports Nutrition, said: “While minerals are vital to life, if your body’s ability to excrete them is compromised, excessive intake can become a serious problem. The nutritional challenge for people with chronic kidney disease is , many of the foods we eat (such as meat and dairy) are rich in phosphorus, and people diagnosed with chronic kidney disease are advised to reduce their intake of large amounts of protein in their diets. The dilemma faced by people with chronic kidney disease is that the phosphorus in the body The accumulation of gluten increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, and can lead to cardiovascular disease, but if you reduce protein intake, you gradually lose a lot of muscle (muscle wasting). Both conditions increase the risk of death, and muscle wasting also reduce the patient's quality of life.

He continued: “Most marketed oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are relatively high in minerals, including phosphorus. Danish Ara Food Ingredients can fill this market gap with Lacprodan® BLG-100, which has Low in minerals, rich in nutrients and great for muscle protection.”

“Our 100% pure BLG ingredient is rich in essential amino acids and leucine, and contains high-quality protein to meet the nutritional needs of patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. It is extremely low in phosphorus and can supplement protein without affecting The requirement for low mineral intake is therefore an excellent solution for medical nutritional products.”

Earlier this year, Lacprodan® BLG-100 received positive reviews from EFSA for its novel food application, confirming its safety and suitability for use in EU food. In addition, Lacprodan® BLG-100 recently received the American Dairy Products Institute (ADPI) 2022 Dairy Ingredient Innovation Breakthrough Award.
